Prismatic Jane Eyre is a project run by Creative Multilingualism's 6th strand: Prismatic Translation. It sets out to discover what you can learn from studying the many translations of Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre.
For example, did you know that 'plain' (an important word in Jane Eyre) has been translated in 68 different ways across the Italian translations? (In terms that correspond to: simple, ugly, clear, insignificant, sincere, well, open, modest, frank, easy, distinct, dull, common, smooth, white, and so on, and on).
The research team will be conducting comparative analyses of the text across languages and finding new ways to display the findings, both in writing and via interactive visualisations.
