Prismatic Finnegans Wake
Finnegans Wake is not 'in' any language; so its translations cannot be 'into' languages either. Tiphaine Samoyault and Ma Sha will explore eight translations of the Wake, into French, Italian and Chinese, elucidating the shifts, elucidations and recreations that result, and reconsidering the concept of translation in the light of them. All welcome!
Tiphaine Samoyault is Professor of littérature générale et comparée at the Sorbonne Nouvelle. A novelist and critic, she is the author of around a dozen books, including the official biography of Roland Barthes; she is also one of the French translators of Ulysses.
Ma Sha is a researcher in modern literature at the Sorbonne Nouvelle.
This event is organised by Oxford Comparative Criticism and Translation (OCCT), a research programme based jointly at The Oxford Research Centre in the Humanities and the Centre for Comparative Criticism and Translation at St. Anne’s College, Oxford.
